You Learned How to Practice Law. Nobody Taught You How to Build the Law Firm.
A practical 12-week operating system that teaches solo and small-firm lawyers how to build and run a more organized, efficient, profitable, and resilient practice.
THE PROBLEM ISN'T PRACTICING LAW
Running the Firm Is a Different Skill Set
Most of us weren't taught how to:
- Know when it's really time to hire.
- Delegate without losing control.
- Understand what the numbers are telling you.
- Build systems that don't depend on your memory.
- Manage clients and expectations efficiently.
- Decide which technology actually saves time.
- Grow without simply creating more work.
- Build a firm that doesn't require the owner to do everything.
I learned those lessons over 27 years of practicing law—including 22 years building and running a law firm—often the hard way. I did not build these systems alone. My wife, Roberta, brought 20 years of corporate process-development experience and later worked with me to design and implement procedures in my firm.
The Solo Firm Blueprint is designed to help you identify what matters, fix what isn't working, and build the systems your firm actually needs—without adding unnecessary work to your life.
EXPLORE THE BLUEPRINTIn Twelve Weeks, You Can See Your Firm Differently
- Define what you want your firm to become
- Understand the economics behind your decisions
- See where your time and money are being wasted
- Identify the systems and processes that need attention
- Decide what to delegate, automate, improve, or stop doing
- Create a practical plan for the next 90 days
The goal isn't to give you more to do. It's to help you decide what actually needs to be done, and build a firm that works better.
INTRODUCING
The Solo Firm Blueprint
A 12-Week Practical Operating System for Lawyers Running Their Own Firms.
The Solo Firm Blueprint is designed to help you step back from the day-to-day demands of practicing law and look deliberately at the business you're building, what's working, what isn't, and what needs to change.
- Understand the business behind your practice
- Build practical systems for people, clients, money, and operations
- Leave with a working blueprint for the firm you actually want to run
This isn't a business-school course or a collection of theories about how a law firm should operate. It's a practical program built from 27 years practicing law—including 22 years building and running my own firm.
You'll do some work along the way because no generic advice can diagnose your firm for you. Every exercise has a purpose: helping you make better decisions based on your own numbers, people, priorities, and goals.
What You'll Build Over 12 Weeks
WEEK 1
WHAT FIRM ARE YOU BUILDING?
Before improving systems, hiring people, or buying technology, define what you are building and what you want the firm to provide for you.
You’ll finish the week with clear priorities and a practical vision to guide the decisions ahead.
WEEK 2
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ENGAGEMENTS
The wrong clients and matters consume time, strain your team, and undermine profitability. You’ll establish practical criteria for evaluating fit, value, risk, and operational demands.
You’ll finish the week with a more disciplined method for deciding which engagements your firm should accept.
WEEK 3
YOUR FIRM’S ECONOMIC ENGINE
Revenue alone does not reveal whether your firm is healthy. You’ll examine how pricing, capacity, expenses, collections, and matter selection work together to produce—or consume—profit.
You’ll finish the week knowing what drives your firm financially and where improvement can have the greatest impact.
WEEK 4
PRICING & ENGAGEMENT ECONOMICS
A busy firm can still be unprofitable. You’ll evaluate whether your fees and payment structures reflect the time, risk, resources, and responsibility required to perform the work.
You’ll finish the week with a practical framework for pricing engagements based on economic reality rather than habit or guesswork.
WEEK 5
INTAKE & CLIENT SELECTION
Intake is where your firm sets expectations, evaluates risk, and decides whether a potential client and matter belong in your practice.
You’ll finish the week with a repeatable process for screening opportunities and beginning the right engagements properly.
WEEK 6
WORKFLOW & PROCESS DESIGN
When routine work depends on memory or individual habits, errors and delays become inevitable. You’ll identify responsibilities, handoffs, deadlines, and completion standards for recurring work.
You’ll finish the week with a practical method for creating and improving reliable workflows.
WEEK 7
CAPACITY, STAFFING & DELEGATION
Being busy does not automatically mean it is time to hire. You’ll evaluate capacity and decide what should be delegated, automated, reassigned, improved, or eliminated.
You’ll finish the week with a clearer plan for distributing work without losing accountability or control.
WEEK 8
KNOW THE NUMBERS THAT DRIVE YOUR FIRM
You do not need to become an accountant, but you must understand what your firm’s numbers are telling you. You’ll identify the financial and operational indicators that matter most.
You’ll finish the week with a practical dashboard for supporting better decisions about pricing, spending, hiring, and growth.
WEEK 9
RISK, RESILIENCE & MANAGEMENT CONTROLS
Every law firm faces financial, ethical, technological, operational, and reputational risks. You’ll identify your firm’s vulnerabilities and evaluate the safeguards already in place.
You’ll finish the week with a practical plan for reducing preventable problems and strengthening the firm’s ability to respond.
WEEK 10
OWNER INDEPENDENCE, LEVERAGE & OPTIONS
A firm that depends on its owner for every answer, approval, and task has limited capacity and limited options. You’ll identify responsibilities that can move away from you without sacrificing appropriate control.
You’ll finish the week with a practical plan for reducing owner dependency through people, systems, technology, and information.
WEEK 11
CONTROLLED GROWTH & HIRING
Growth should solve a demonstrated capacity problem or capture a proven opportunity—not simply add payroll and complexity. You’ll evaluate whether sustained demand, financial capacity, and a defined role support expansion.
You’ll finish the week with a disciplined framework for deciding when and how to hire.
WEEK 12
YOUR 90-DAY IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Insight matters only when it leads to action. You’ll bring the program’s priorities, decisions, and tools together into a realistic implementation sequence.
You’ll finish the program with a 90-day implementation plan assigning priorities, responsibility, timing, and measures of progress.
